Our team of Content Editors tests each app in our database for MacUpdate Desktop compatibility. There’s a variety of reasons that Some apps cannot be installed with MacUpdate Desktop. Here’s a selection of app cases that result in the app being marked as Not Compatible:

  • GUI-less apps (CLI or browser-based)
  • Demos (indie demo, to prevent overwrite of licensed version)
  • Drivers (printers, graphics cards, etc.)
  • Java .jar files
  • Launchers, or downloads that are downloaders, instead of the apps themselves
  • Apps with no version strings
  • Plug-ins (audio plug-ins, video plug-ins, Xojo, FileMaker)
  • Browser extensions
  • Mail bundle
  • Runtimes (Filemaker, Unity, etc.)
  • Suites, or collections of apps which may or may not match the published version number or which may have a variety of version numbers
  • Version mismatches where internal app version info doesn’t match published version number
  • PPC-only apps
